LS MP forms panel on resettlement of IDPs

Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Lok Sabha MP (Inner Mani-pur), has constituted a 10 member committee to pre-pare a report on the socio- economic profile of Inter-nally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and facilitate their resettlement to their homes.
The committee will have retired IAS officer RK Nimai as chairman while the members include retired IPS officer Thangjam Brojen Singh, Professor Elangbam Bijoykumar Singh (Dept of Economics), Dr Chungneijai Mathew AK (Associate Professor of Dept of History, MU), Professor (Dr) RK Lenin Singh, Editor of Imphal Review of Arts and Politics Pradip Phanjoubam, activist Noni-bala Narengbam, activist Islam Makakmayum, Babie Shirin (Journalist) and Advocate Hijam Chandrakumar, said a notification issued by the MP.
Christened "Committee on Resettlement of Internally Displaced People of Manipur," the committee will investigate the socio-economic profile of IDPs, particularly those living in relief camps in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching to formulate policies and programme to facilitate their resettlement to their homes after ameliorating their condition.
The committee will pre-sent its report within three months from the date of issuance of this notification which is July 13, 2024 .
Bimol Akoijam said that Manipur has been going through an unprecedented crisis marked by colossal violence that has subverted society and polity in the State since May 3, 2023 .
Beside many cases of sexual and physical assault, over 200 people have died while thousands are languishing in relief camps, he continued and added that these IDPs have been enduring inhuman hardships.
As per the MP, the committee will prepare a report on the social, economic and educational status of the IDPs and their conditions in relief camps.
The report will also include recommendations on steps to be taken to ameliorate their (IDPs) current situation and facilitate their resettlement to their homes, the MP added.
Stating that the committee may co-opt or invite such person(s) as it deems appropriate to participate in any of its meetings as special invitee(s), Dr Bimol continued that the committee may also deploy research assistants, besides his staff, to carry out data collection and analysis.
The chairperson and the members of the committee shall work in honorary capacity.
However, they shall be provided the necessary facilities and requirements by the office of the MP, he added.
