Shirui Lily bloom draws visitors ahead of fest

Ukhrul, May 13 2025: The vibrant bloom of Shirui Lily, state flower of Manipur, is drawing a steady flow of visitors as it reaches its peak season, just in time for the upcoming state-level Shirui Lily festival scheduled to commence on May 20 .

"The blooming started around the last week of April and is now entering the peak season.

We expect that its peak bloom, mid-May, will coincide with the five-day long festival, which will run until May 24," Shirui Youth Club president Ningthemngam Shangh told The People's Chronicle on Tuesday.

He noted that since the first bloom of the lily, there has been a steady stream of tourists from outside the state, as well as local visitors.

Shangh explained that while the daily count of visitors during weekdays is around 30, this figure can reach up to 100 on weekends.

"Apart our local visitors, tourists from other states, such as Kerala, are arriving in significant numbers," he added.

Notably, the lilies are blooming more abundantly this year compared to previous years.

Shangh attributed this to the timely traditional burning of the forest and the sowing of lily seeds by the local youth.

"In previous years, burning was done during the February-March period, but this year we carried it out in January," he related, adding that the initiative of sowing lily seeds undertaken by the Shirui Youth Club may have also contributed to the increased number of blooms this year.
