Holding three more doctors guilty in connection with the infamous scam of 1981 wherein an amount of Rs 7 lakh was swindled during purchase of medical equipment a special court has sentenced the trio to three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 50,000
each.
Recounting that the case related to the scam was handled by the CBI, Special Public Prosecutor advocate P Ibomcha Singh who appeared on behalf of the State said the sentence was one of ten cases.
At the hearing held today in the court of Special Judge No I (Manipur West) Th Surbala Devi, the accused three G Mani sharma; T Vijoychandra and P Brajamani were produced with the Court decreeing that failure to comply with the fine within three months would entail additional sentence term of six more months.
The same Court during an earlier hearing on the case but on different FIRs in January this year had also sentenced two doctors including Mani sharma to three years RI .
As per case dossiers, the three sentenced today were found guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act related to abatement of conspiracy, cheating, forgery etc.
Sources said that persons involved in the scam purchased 40 baby weighing machines at the rate of Rs 7500 per piece contrary to the then market price only Rs 240 .
The case was registered in Jiribam police station in 1982 .
