Imphal, November 08 2009: In yet another attack on migrant workers, a non-Manipuri grocery items hawker has been admitted to JN Hospital in serious condition after unidentified armed persons shot at him today.

Following the repeated attacks on migrant workers, a relief camp has been opened at Dharmashala since November 2.At present 18 migrant workers are taking refuge in the relief camp.

The latest incident which has come just a few days after one non-Manipuri migrant worker was shot dead at Takyel, took place at Lamlai Bazar under Lamlai Police Station at around 1.45 pm today.

The injured victim has been identified as Shankar Sahu (24) s/o Hiralal Sahu of Rohtash district but currently staying at Telipati, Imphal.

He goes around selling grocery items in a bicycle.

Migrant workers taking shelter at the Dharmshala relief camp following of spate of violence against non-locals

According to police report, like every day, Shankar Sahu had left home at around 8.30 am today to sell his grocery items.

While he was Lamlai Bazar this afternoon, two unidentified youths approached him.

One of the youths pulled out a pistol and shot at him from close range.

There were three bullet marks on his left shoulder, left side stomach and just below the left side chest.

The bullets were said to be lodged inside his body.

Meanwhile, so far 18 migrant workers have come to take refuge in the relief camp that the Government has set up at Dharmashala.

Most of them are daily wage earners.

Eight of them have come from Sekmai, four from Samurou, three from Keithelmanbi of National highway 53, two from Pangalsiphai and one from Porompat.

On the day of opening the relief camp, in all 20 migrant workers have come to take shelter.

But in the following days, four of them slipped from the camp.

Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West District has been arranging the meal for the migrant workers staying in the relief camp.

Four days earlier, the Government had issued a notification directing all migrant workers not to venture out of Imphal Municipal area.

Two shot dead: In two separate incidents, Assam Rifles shot dead one UG suspect in a reported encounter while unidentified armed persons killed another person last night.

Out of the two bodies, the identified of the slain UG suspect is yet to be confirmed.

In the first incident which took place at around 7 pm yesterday, troops of 29 Assam Rifles shot dead one UG suspect during a encounter at a place called Tulyanglok village, located 65 kms northeast of Tengnoupal Police Station in Chandel District.

According to a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles in this connection, following a special tip off on the movement of militant cadres in the general area of Border Pillar No, 86, troops of 29 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under HQ IGAR (South) launched an operation in general area of Tulyanglok last night, At around 7 pm, the troops spotted suspicious movements of militants and one being challenged, the militants opened fire on the troops who retaliated immediately, resulting in elimination of a militant.

One lethode gun made in USA, one live lethode round, one fired cartridge of lethode, four hand grenades, which were subsequently destroyed in situ and one radio set were recovered from the slain UG cadre.

Meanwhile, the police have picked up by the body that bore five bullet wounds on his chest and kept at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital for identification.

Police report said that the slain UG suspect is about 5 ft 6 inches tall, with wheatish complexion, pierced earlobe and elongated face.

He was found wearing brown and mixed colour full short and brown long pant.

There is also a tattoo mark of 'Romita I Love You' on the left hand.

In the second incident, a 35-year old man was found shot dead by unidentified armed persons at Sarik Kongjil under Waikhong Police Station at around 8 pm yesterday.

The victim has been identified as Longjam Boboi s/o late Nila of Salungpham but staying at Hiyanglam Tera Pishak.

The body has been handed over to the bereaved family members after post-mortem examination at Lilong Primary Health Centre today.

Information received by the press, Boboi was former UG cadre who had been staying at home after retirement for the last few years and working as a handyman of a passenger bus plying between Imphal and Wabagai.

Some two-three days back, he had to the place of his wife in Sarik Kongjil in connection with the death of his father-in-law.

At around 8 am yesterday, local people heard gun shots near Sarik Konjil Achouba Mapal and found Boboi shot dead.
