Imphal, January 12 2015:
A powerful improvised explosive device (IED) weighing around 5 Kgs was detected today at the foot of a tree just opposite to the main gate of 40 Assam Rifles D-Coy post at Lilong, Thoubal district.
Incidentally, the AR post is located adjacent to Lilong Police Station.
One hand grenade exploded to the North of a sentry tower of the AR post on the western side of Imphal-Moreh highway at around 7.20 pm yesterday.
However, there was no report of any casualty.
The IED was detected at around 7 am today.
According to information culled from the spot, one man came to the sentry tower amidst the dense fog this morning and told the AR personnel on duty that something which looked like a bomb was at the foot of a tree just across the highway.
Soon Assam Rifles sear-ched the area using sniffer dog.
As the dog indicated that the unattended article might be explosive, the highway was blocked and cordoned off with the help of police.
Later, a bomb disposal squad of Manipur Police arrived at the spot and confirmed that the article was a bomb.
The bomb disposal squad then defused the bomb safely.
The bomb was a remote controlled IED, and it contained RDX and steel balls.
The bomb weighing around 5 Kgs was claymore-charged.
The bomb was taken to a firing range located at a hill slope of Thoubal Khunou where it was detonated safely at around 10.30 am.
Notably, one hand grenade hurled by some unidentified persons exploded at the AR post on December 17 last year before yesterday's similar grenade attack.
Earlier on October 29, an IED exploded just behind the AR post in a paddy field.
Although there were no casualties in the two grenade attacks, an 11 year old boy was killed in the IED blast.
