Imphal, June 27 2025:
All electric vehicles (e-rickshaws) ferrying passengers (contract carriage) are prohibited from accessing the RIMS Road and RIMS Gate without the permission of the Transport Department, according to the RIMS Gate Transporters' Joint Administrative Action Council (JAAC).
Announcing this at a press meet held at Manipur Press Club here on Friday, Council's media coordinator Kh Bota Luwang said that unauthorised e-rickshaws - not in possession of transport permit issued by the Transport Department - have caused frequent conflicts with licensed RIMS Gate passenger service providers.
On May 8, the Transport director notified that the State Transport Authority (STA) had not given any permission to electric vehicles (e-rickshaws) to operate passenger services along the RIMS Road and RIMS gate.
Accordingly, the JAAC decided to impose a complete ban on e-vehicle passenger services along the RIMS Road and RIMS gate except for para-transit reserved vehicles, he said.
Luwang explained that the Council took the decision after the legitimate RIMS Gate drivers faced a lot of issues tracking the items lost by patients while riding the non-permit-ted diesel auto rickshaw and e-rickshaws of other societies and associations.
He urged all to operate with clear specification on origin and destination, as instructed by the Transport Department.
"All drivers must remove the unauthorised destination (RIMS) label from their vehicles," he said.
Luwang then directed drivers of diesel auto, petrol auto and e-rickshaw societies and associations picking up passengers from the market to drop the passengers on the north side of RIMS Gate near the police barrack as the southern side would be reserved for the original RIMS Gate passenger service providers.
"This step is being taken up for the convenience of patients in need of emergency service", he said and urged the other societies and associations to extend their support and not interfere when action is taken up against rule breakers.
