IBSD conducts training, distributes aromatic plant materials

Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Takyelpat, Imphal, in collaboration with Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC), organised a one-day hands-on training and distribution of quality aromatic planting materials on Monday as part of its first phase programme.
According to a statement of IBSD, its director (additional charge) Dr Nanaocha Sharma, who is also the programme chair, highlighted the institute's research and societal activities across its centres in Imphal, Shillong, Sikkim and Mizoram.
He said that the cultivation of aromatic plants holds strong economic potential as a sustainable business venture in Manipur.
Inaugurating the event, science and technology secretary Kengoo Zuringla stressed the importance Of aromatic plants in generating income for progressive farmers in the state.
Principal investigator Dr Sarangthem Indira Devi, Scientist-F, underscored the training's role in promoting aromatic plant cultivation as a source of employment and income generation to improve the region's socio-economic conditions.
The programme drew about 150 participants, including 30 progressive farmers and state government officials.
Farmers were trained in advanced cultivation techniques for aromatic plants, and around 3.5 lakh slips of aromatic plants were distributed to farmers from various hill districts of the state.
Officials said that the initiative aims to boost local production, encourage entrepreneurship and strengthen rural livelihoods through the sustainable cultivation of aromatic crops, the statement added.
