Mass plantation drive carried out

Thoubal/Imphal, July 06 2025: As part of the 76th Van Mahotsav and the nationwide campaign "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam", a tree plantation drive was conducted by Kakching Range of the Thoubal Forest Division on Sunday at View Centre in Sarik Konjin, under the Wangoo Beat Office.

Addressing the gathering, Kakching range officer Huidrom Sundar highlighted the crucial role of the local villagers in ensuring the survival and growth of the newly planted trees.

He said that the forest department alone cannot realise the goal of preserving the environment and maintaining water resources without active community participation.

The programme participated by villagers of Sarik Konjin, was attended by beat officers L Ratnananda (Wangoo), N Bojen (Waikhong) and N Bikramjit (Pallel), members of the Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC), Village Level Federation (VLF) and locals of the area.

An awareness-cum-tree plantation programme was also conducted at Haoreibi Awang Leikai, Keithel, in Imphal West.

According to Nature Club, Haoreibi president Sh Ruhikumar Singh, the event featured discussions on tree plantation, eco club initiatives and community involvement in environmental conservation.

The speakers included Central Forest Division staffer Leimapokpam Sanju Singh, Nature Club advisor Yendrembam Jiten Meitei, Haoreibi Meira Paibi president Sharungbam Maipakpi Devi and Nature Club president Sharungbam Ruhikumar Singh.

New members of the Nature Club and the Green Warriors also participated actively, sharing their views on tree plantation practices and environmental policies.

A resolution was adopted during the event, reinforcing the collective support for the Nature Club's demand for the enactment of a "Law for the Protection of Trees in Manipur", a long time request of the club to the government.

As part of the programme, more than 100 fruit-bearing and ornamental tree saplings were planted, and saplings distributed to the public to encourage wider participation in the greening efforts.
