Samskrita Bharati, Manipur Prant organised a Sanskrit Chhatra Sammelanam programme at JN Manipur Dance Academy auditorium, here, on Sunday.
Speaking as one of the presidium members, Samskrita Bharati, Manipur Prant adhyaksa S Vedeshwar Sharma informed that the programme has been organised for students pursuing Sanskrit learning.
He continued that Samskrita Bharati is an organisation working for the promo -tion of Sanskrit and it has around 24 branches across the globe.
As many foreigners want to learn Sanskrit, which is the second oldest language in the world, efforts are being made to promote the language in Manipur as well, including introducing it as a language course in educational institutions, he said.
A diploma course in Sanskrit has already been introduced in Manipur University, he added.
Vedeshwar observed that despite having originated in India, the people do not have knowledge of Sanskrit, with no state speaking the language predominantly.
However, it is chanted in religious rituals in the form of hymns and prayers.
Although steps are being taken up in this regard, more efforts are needed to revive this language, he said.
The programme was also attended by Sanskrit Pandit T Amusa-na Shastri; MU Hindi Department head Prof Subadani Devi; Radha Madhav Adarsha Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya principal Y Jogeshwar; and Presidency College Hindi Department head Dr Tankanath Sharma as presidium members.
