Bishnupur, April 29 2024:
Informing that Ngaikhong High School is on the verge of extinction in the absence of adequate number of teaching and non teaching staff, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has urged the government to take up necessary measures to save the school by deputing required staff.
A joint team of DESAM and All Clubs Co-ordinating Committee (ACCC), Ngaikhong Khullen visited the school on Monday to assess the condition.
Interacting with the media during the visit, DESAM education secretary Oinam Romesh said that there are 374 students in the school, which has recently added pre-primary classes.
The number of student was much higher in the last academic session.
However, due to lack of adequate staff, several parents shifted their children to other schools.
Today, the school is facing shortage of teaching staff.
Moreover, there is no teaching staff for pre-primary classes even though the classes have been added from the current academic session.
According tp ACCC general coordinator Takhellambam Surjit, the committee has been looking after the shortcomings of the school for the sake of the students and their career.
They have also brought up the matter with the local MLA, he added.
Meanwhile, a joint statement of DESAM and ACCC said that Ngaikhong Khullen, located around 29 km from Imphal, has around 1500 students from Pre-nursery to class X at present.
The villagers mostly rely on fish farming and agriculture for their survival.
As most of the families are poor, there are substantial number of school dropouts in the village.
Though there are two government schools, one aided and a private school, Ngaikhong High School is the only government school in the surrounding area that offers pre-primary to class X.The school has no headmaster and has one assistant headmaster against two sanctioned posts.
There are only two arts graduate teachers against six posts and one Hindi graduate teacher against two posts.
The school has no home science teacher, Hindi primary teacher, pre-primary teacher, chowkidar, grade IV (peon) and LDC.
Construction of a hostel for both boys and girls called Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Abhiyan Vidyalaya began in September 2022 but it stopped after Phase-1 construction work.
As a result, the school'is utilising a rented building at Ngak-choupokpi, and there are several displaced students from Churachandpur, Tron-glaobi and other villages, the statement said while drawing attention of the government to send the required staff and ensure proper functioning of the school.
