AMUCO vice president Dr Norendro.
Thokchom highlighted the cultural and dietary significance of fish and rice in Meetei society, describing them as inseparable staples.
He pointed out that while Manipur consumes approximately 52 metric tonnes of fish annually, the state produces only about 30 metric tonnes.
The remaining demand is met through imports from outside the state, which he warned could pose potential health risks due to questionable quality.
Dr Norendro expressed belief that with proper training and support, local fish farmers can boost production to meet the state's demand and reduce dependency on imported fish.
He said AMUFFA plans to organise similar training programmes across all districts to achieve the goal of fish yield self-sufficiency.
