10-day fish farming training begins

Imphal, June 19 2025:
A 10-day fish farming training, programme organised by Imphal West District United Fish Farmers' Association (IWDUFFA), Hiyangkhong area, a constituent body of All Manipur United Fish Farmers' Association (AMUFFA), kicked off on Thursday with the aim of empowering local fish farmers through skill development and economic self-reliance.
The training is being held under the aegis of All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) and sponsored by the Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI) of the State Bank of India (SBI) .
SBI RSETI director Y Deben and AMUFFA president Bimolchand attended the inaugural session as chief guest and president respectively.
AMUCO vice-president Dr Norendro Thokchom and assistant secretary (organisation) Th Shantikumar were also present as guests of honour among others.
Speaking at the event, Y Deben urged the trainees to use the knowledge gained during the training to bring about a positive shift in the local economy.
He assured that banks are ready to provide full support to dedicated farmers and encouraged them to take the initiative seriously for long-term socio-economic benefits.
Dr Norendro Thokchom stressed the need for self-reliance and reducing dependency on imported products.
In what he termed as a 'form of nationalism', Dr Norendro explained about ensuring self-sufficient fish production which would help retain cash flow within the state.
"Fish farming is not a low-status occupation but an essential contributor to the economy," he reminded the trainees and informed that AMUFFA was established to promote high-yield, chemical-free fish production in the state.
