Dredging of Kakching Ithei canal begins

Kakching, June 12 2025: In view of poor condition of the Kakching Ithei canal, the main irrigation source for farmlands in Kakching and surrounding areas, Kakching Ithei Committee started dredging the canal using excavators from June 10 .

Speaking to media persons, Committee president Yengkhom Achou noted With regret that the canal is on verge of disappearing due to gradual shallowness and shrinking width, consequently resulting in inundation of farmlands even during light rainfall.

After the recent continuous rainfall submerged vast tract of the farmlands, decision was taken to dredge the canal with support of the farmers, he added.

Conceding that the Committee is not in a position to fund repair and maintenance work, Achou appealed to authorities concerned to do the needful to save the canal.

He also appealed for public support for the ongoing dredging taken up with the help of farmers.

The canal was constructed in 1790 under the aegis of then Kakching chief Moirangthem Athouba alias Samuroiba.
