Imphal, July 06 2025:
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) have announced a joint sit-in protest on Monday in response to the state government's continued silence on the obstruction of journalists at Gwaltabi.
According to a statement issued by AMWJU, the protest is scheduled from 10 am to 1 pm at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai community hall.
The journalist bodies said that sit-in is to reaffirm their stand for press freedom and to express deep concern over the government's inaction regarding the incident that took place on the opening day of the Shirui Lily Festival.
On the day of the incident, media persons travelling to Ukhrul to cover the festival's opening programme were unlawfully blocked at Gwaltabi.
The obstruction prevented jour nalists from carrying out their professional duties, and it was condemned as a violation of press freedom and the public's right to information.
Despite repeated appeals from the media fraternity, the government has not taken any visible action or issued any clarification regarding the obstruction.
Both AMWJU and EGM have termed this inaction a serious affront to democratic accountability and the functioning of a free press.
The two journalist organisations called on all members to attend the protest in solidarity and stand united in defence of journalistic rights.
