Mass rally for disturbance-free education on July 5

Coordinating Committee on Disturbance-Free Education Zone Demand - a coalition of 16 organisations including Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) - will observe the Disturbance-Free Education Zone Demand Day 2025 with a mass rally across five valley districts of the state on July 5.Announcing the upcoming rally at Manipur Press Club, here, on Monday, committee convenor Somorjit Luwang said that the march is a part of an ongoing movement that began on July 5, 2008, to ensure that the education sector remains free from all forms of disturbance.
He informed that all preparations for the event have been completed.
For Imphal West and Imphal East districts, the rally will begin from THAU Ground, Thangmeiband and culminate at Imphal College, Kwakeithel.
For Kakching and Thoubal districts, the rally will be held from BASU Ground, Khangabok to Thoubal College.
In Bishnupur district, it will take place from DSA Ground to ECO, Thiyam Leikai community hall.
Somorjit said that the committee will raise several key demands during the rally including an appeal to all armed organisations to refrain from making unreasonable demands on educational institutions and a call on the government to avoid politicising education.
It will also demand the enactment of a law mandating a minimum of 220 teaching days in an academic year to ensure that the government s failure in taking up timely initiatives does not adversely affect the academic environment, he added.
"Other demands include end to corruption, favouritism and nepotism in all education-related matters, appointment of directors of education (Schools) and (University) from among the teaching community, and declaring education as a disturbance-free zone," he elaborated.
Somorjit appealed to students from Class 8 and above, teachers and parents to take part in the rally and urged all concerned not to call any bandh, general strike or anything that could disrupt the event.
