Chingai ex-MLA Peter Pheirei no more, Khasim condoles

Former Chingai MLA Peter Pheirei died at 4 am on Tuesday at his Viewland residence in Ukhrul town.
He was 87 .
A condolence service was held at TNL Hall here on Tuesday, where hundreds paid their last respects.
TNL president Sword Vashum remarked, "Peter Pheirei is a household name among the Tangkhul community.
His demise is a great loss".
After the memorial service, Pheirei's body has been taken to his native Phungcham village, where he will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Chingai MLA Khashim Vashum expressed his deep condolences to the family of Peter Pheirei.

In a condolence message, MLA Khashim reflected on Peter Pheirei's significant contributions, stating, "As a former president and chief judge of Tangkhul Naga Long, senior advocate, and the youngest Tangkhul Naga MLA at the age of 32, his legacy will be remembered" .
Khashim also recalled Pheirei's remarkable achievements as a leader and public servant, affirming that they will forever be cherished, while extending prayers for the peaceful repose of the departed leader's soul.
"My heartfelt tribute goes out to a dedicated leader from Phungcham village, 45 Chingai A/C, UKhrul district.
May his family find strength and solace during this difficult time," the MLA added.
Born on March 4, 1938 in Phungcham village, Pheirei was a figure of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family and community.
He began, his education at Phungcham Government LP School and continued at Ukhrul Government High School, later completing his matriculation at Tolloi Academy in 1960 .
Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he pursued higher education at Gauhati University, earning multiple degrees, including PU, BA, MA, and LLB by 1969 .
Pheirei's career in education began as headmaster of Meluri High School in Nagaland, followed by his role as headmaster at Raphei High School in 1968.His dedication to nurturing young minds led to his appointment as a lecturer in Political Science at Pettigrew College in 1969 .
Beyond his academic contributions, Pheirei was deeply committed to public service.
He served as the Seasonal Secretary of the First Convention of the First United Naga Integration Committee and was elected as an MLA for Manipur in 1971 .
His leadership extended to community organisations; he was president of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) from 1987 to 1988 and provided legal counsel to various organisations, including TNL and the Tangkhul Youth Organisation.
He also served as the Chief Justice of TNL from 2006 to 2007 .
Pheirei's legacy is marked by his intellect, humility, and dedication to his people.
He authored several books, including 'Wung Tangkhul Customary Law', 'Relation between the Tribals of Manipur and the 'Maharaja of Manipur before and after 1825', and 'Illegal, Unhistorical Trial of the Lord Jesus Christ' .
