Imphal, July 03 2025:
The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) has submitted a memorandum to the Governor, raising alarm over the repeated and worsening floods affecting several areas of the state due to neglect of the "Turel Lourambal" infrastructure.
The settlements impacted by recurring floods include Keikon, Nilakuthi, Koirengei, Maibakhul, Mongjam, Heingang, Kontha Achanbigei, Kontha Khabam, Kontha Ahullup, Kairang, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Khurai.
The floods have damaged homes, farmland, and livelihoods.
AIMS attributes the flooding primarily to the lack of proper maintenance and management of the Turel Lourambal, a crucial flood control structure designed to regulate river flow and protect surrounding settlements.
The group also highlighted the absence of regular inspections, cleaning operations, and government-provided relief or compensation to affected residents.
In its memorandum, AIMS urged the Governor to ensure regular maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of the Turel Lourambal; to establish and implement a holistic long-term, community-inclusive flood management and prevention plan; and to provide immediate compensation and relief packages to residents affected by the recurring floods.
AIMS stressed the urgency of the situation, stating that timely action is essential not only for safeguarding lives and property but also in ensuring sustainable development in flood-prone areas of Manipur.
