Gorkha bodies seek justice in Rijal murder case

Five Gorkha organisations in the state have jointly condemned the brutal murder of 29-year-old Juni Rijal, allegedly by her husband Niraj Thapa, and demanded stringiest form of punishment under the law of the land.
In a joint statement, All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU), Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union (MGWU), Pangei Gorkha Youth Club, Village Development Committee, and Women's Society (Nepali Basti) expressed deep shock and outrage over the killing, which took place on the night of April 16 at the couple's Pangei Nepali Basti residence.
The victim, a mother of two, was reportedly subjected to years ot domestic abuse.
Neighbours and locals claimed that the accused is a habitual drinker with history of being abusive.
The organisations said that the crime has shaken the Gorkha community, which traditionally upholds strong family values.
Calling it a "moral wound to the conscience of society", they called upon the government and civil societies to strengthen mechanisms to prevent domestic violence and ensure justice for victims emphasising the need for greater awareness, support systems, and community vigilance.
Meanwhile, a murder case has been registered at Heingang police station in this regard, and the accused husband, who initially fled, was apprehended after a two-day manhunt.
