17 UGs held, weapons recovered: PRO

Indian Army and Assam Rifles formation under Spear Corps in coordination with Manipur police, CRPF, BSF, and ITBP conducted series of operations in Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching, Kamjong', Tengnoupal, Senapati, Imphal East and Imphal West districts between June 15 and 22 resulting in apprehension of 17 cadres and recovery of 24 weapons, three improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades, ammunition and warlike stores.
According to PRO IGAR (S), operations conducted in Leirongthel Pitra area in Thoubal district resulted in recovery of one each .303 rifle, 12 bore double barrel gun, pistol, and ammunition and warlike stores; one 5.56mm IN-SAS rifle, a 9mm pistol, three bolt-action rifles, one 7.62mm self-loading rifle (SLR), ammunition and war-like stores from Sangaithel area and three rifles, grenades, ammunition and war like stores from Tingri in Imphal West district; two bolt-action single-barrel rifles, one single-barrel pompi and one double-barrel pompi from Kalenjang in Senapati district; one .32 pistol from Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou and one.
303 rifle from Karang village in Bishnupur district; three IEDs, an AK 47, a 9mm carbine, two SBBL guns, a modified 9mm pistol, explosives, ammunition and warlike stores from Nongmaikhong (East of Imphal River) in Kakching district.
The apprehended cadres and the recovered items have been handed over to Manipur police, said the PRO.
On the other hand, Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Army, seized a large consignment of contraband near the Moreh-Chandel route in Tengnoupal district on Monday.
According to the PRO, during patrol, a suspicious vehicle (MN01AS4250) was intercepted near a football ground adjacent to Road Opening Party (ROP) Picket No 18.On inspection, 28 packages containing approximately 14,000 boxes of Win brand cigarettes (20 sticks per box) were recovered.
The estimated market value of the seized contraband is Rs 14 lakh.
The vehicle along with the seized consignment will be handed over to police for further investigation, said the PRO in a release.
