Trees planted at Wakha, RIMS campus

In a bid to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) campaign, Forest Department, in collaboration with Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, organised plantation drive under the theme "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" at Nongdam Shanglen, Wakha, on Sunday as part of the nationwide effort to plant 80 crore saplings by September 2024 and 140 crore by March 2025, under the ministry of environment, forest and climate change.
According to a statement issued by DFO, central forest division, the initiative aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of deforestation, such as frequent landslides and global warming, while promoting the importance of tree conservation.
Inaugurating the event, MP Leishemba Sanajaoba highlighted the critical need for collective action to safeguard the environment.
"As responsible citizens, we must care for these saplings like our mothers, nurturing them to maturity," he said, emphasising that every tree planted today is a step towards creating a greener and healthier future.
The plantation drive had the participation of community members, including devotees, students, teachers, local clubs, and residents.
As part of this nationwide environmental movement, the state is joining hands with the rest of the country to make a significant contribution towards combating climate change and protecting natural resources, the statement added.
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, also conducted a mega tree plantation drive titled "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" on Sunday, as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 campaign.
The drive held at RIMS Mini Football Ground, also included a beautification initiative for the ground.
According to a statement, RIMS director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma highlighted the importance of planting trees in transforming RIMS into a green zone and emphasised the institute's dedication to becoming a plastic-free campus through restrictions on use of plastic bottles since last year.
Among others, the drive was participated by RIMS medical superintendent, deputy director (administration), sub-dean (academics), faculty members, staff, students, and housekeeping staff from CRED and MSS, Imphal.
Meanwhile, in conjunction with the tree plantation drive, a Swachhta Health Camp was organised at Langmeidong Higher Secondary School in Kakching district on Sunday during which doctors of various departments provided free medical care to approximately 150 people.
Free medicines were also distributed to those attending the camp, the statement added.
