Imphal, June 21 2025:
In a remarkable medical feat, BABINA Hospital successfully performed a rare and complex vascular surgery on an 8-year-old boy suffering from a persistent swelling on his right thumb, an ailment that had troubled him since birth.
According to a statement issued by the hospital, the child had been grappling with a persistent and gradually enlarging swelling since bir.th.Despite years of conservative treatment and multiple visits to various hospitals, the condition worsened over time, eventually causing pain and affecting the boy's ability to write with his dominant hand.
Alarmed by the increasing size and discomfort, the child's father brought him to BABINA Hospital, where he was examined by Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon consultant Dr Sidartha Lukram.
Detailed clinical and imaging evaluations led to a diagnosis of high-flow arteriovenous (AV) malformation, which the doctor described as "a rare and complex vascular condition that affects only about one per cent of the population", the statement said.
Given the critical nature and location of the malformation, the child underwent laser-assisted surgical excision on June 16.The specialised microvascular surgery was performed by a team led by Dr Sidartha and included nerve reconstruction.
The use of laser technology was crucial in controlling bleeding during the operation, the statement noted.
It further added that the procedure was completed with minimal blood loss, and the boy was discharged the next day with restored hand function and no post-operative complications.
"We had visited many hospitals and doctors, but my son's condition never improved," the child's father was quoted as saying in the statement.
"BABINA Hospital offered advanced technology, better infrastructure, and affordable care, all within Manipur.
We didn't have to travel outside the state for treatment".
The statement also informed that the hospital houses a dedicated Super Speciality Vascular Centre, equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical infrastructure.
The centre provides treatment for a range of vascular conditions including AV malformations, arterial diseases, varicose veins, and aneurysms, significantly reducing the need for patients to seek costly care outside the state.
"If left untreated, AV malformations can infiltrate surrounding structures or rupture, leading to serious and even life-threatening complications," Dr Sidartha said.
"However, with timely diagnosis and precise surgical intervention, the outcome can be significantly Improved," he added.
BABINA Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to delivering high-quality and affordable healthcare, the statement said, while adding that successful treatment of this rare case underscores the hospital's growing role as one of the regional leaders in complex vascular care.
