Imphal, July 10 2025: Department of Environmental Science, Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) in collaboration with Directorate of Environment & Climate Change observed World Environment Day at DM College of Science, on Thursday.

Speaking as the chief guest, DMU vice chancellor Prof W Chandbabu observed that people seem to forget the importance of protecting the environment all year round except for the month of June.

He said that in addition to observing the day, the government as well as educational institutions should also take the lead in spreading awareness amongst the masses.

Chandbabu also pointed out the widespread plastic pollution, while adding that all drains and ditches remain blocked during monsoons and often times, the clogging is caused by plastic bottles.

He observed that the lack of solid waste management awareness amongst the masses often leads to people dumping their garbage inside drains or rivers which then carry the plastics to Loktak Lake, which is more serious.

"While implementing policy for combatting pollution is crucial, the most important part is to help the people understand the consequences", he remarked.

The VC then urged all concerned to dispose of any garbage including plastics appropriately.

"Failing to do so would not only be det rimental to our health but also negatively impact the ecosystem.

Thus, all sections of society should play an important role," he stressed.

Presided over by DM College of Science principal Environmental Sciences dean Prof Ksh Birbal Singh, the observance was attended by DMU ex VC Prof N Rajmuhon, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change director Dr T Brajakumar and Department of Environmental Science head (PG) Prof Koijam KK Mani Bhushan as guests of honour.
