RIMS observes World Schizophrenia Day 2025

The Department of Psychiatry, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed World Schizophrenia Day under the theme "Rethink the Label, Reclaim the Story" at the psychiatry department premises on Saturday.
According to a release by RIMS PRO, the programme aimed to raise awareness about schizophrenia, challenge the associated stigma, and highlight the importance of comprehensive care and community support for individuals affected by the disorder.
Speaking on the occasion, department of psychiatry senior professor RK Lenin Singh emphasised the need to break down stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding schizophrenia.
He stated, "It is time we stop defining people by their diagnosis and start recognising their individuality, potential, and the right to live a life with dignity and hope".
Department of psychiatry head Dr S Gojendra Singh elaborated on the evolving understanding of schizophrenia and the importance of changing the narrative around it.
He also highlighted the crucial shift from a purely medical model to a more inclusive and 'person-centred' approach in mental health care.
Adding to the discussion, head in charge of clinical psychology department Dr Sameeta Ng spoke on the role of psychologists in the management of schizophrenia.
She underlined the importance of psychological interventions in conjunction with pharmacological treatment.
"Cognitive-behavioural therapy, psycho-education, family therapy, and rehabilitation are key components in empowering individuals and improving outcomes," she noted.
The release also informed that the event featured a 'moving sharing session' by family members of patients undergoing treatment for schizophrenia.
Family members spoke about their challenges, breakthroughs, and the importance of sus,-tained support systems.
Their testimonies reflected the struggles faced due to societal stigma and the critical role of empathy and professional guidance in the recovery journey.
