CJ K Somasekhar visits Chandel District Court

Manipur High Court Chief Justice K Somasekhar, accompanied by other judges, namely justices A Bimol Singh and A Guneshwar Sharma and High Court registrar general Ojesh Mutum visited Chandel District Court Complex on Wednesday.
According to a press release of the High Court, the Chief Justice and his entourage were warmly received by Imphal West District & Sessions Judge Yumkham Rother, under whose judicial division the revenue district of Chandel presently falls, along with the CJM Chandel and JMFC Moreh and other court officials.
The reception was also joined by Law & Legislative Affairs Department secretary (Judicial) N Keertichand Singh and the district administration led by DC L Nandakumar Singh, SP Dharmendra Kumar, Chandel District Bar Association president RT Rebirthson, All Tribal Lawyers' Association general secretary Khalter Khampa, and other members of the Bar.
An interactive session was held with stakeholders from the Bar and the district administration, during which the feasibility and preparedness for the establishment of a full-fledged District & Sessions Court at Chandel town was discussed.
The deliberations highlighted the aspirations of the legal fraternity and residents of Chandel, who have long sought enhanced access to justice within the district.
Currently, the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Civil Judge (Senior Division) is the sole judicial establishment functioning in Chandel District.
Another Judicial Magistrate First Class-cum-Civil Judge (Junior Division) is posted at Moreh, which falls under the separate revenue district of Tengnoupal.
It is noteworthy that the court of CJM, Chandel was inaugurated in 2012 .
However, despite being designated as an aspirational district, further progress is necessary to strengthen judicial infrastructure, increase manpower, and ensure equitable access to jus tice for the people of Chandel.
The release continued that visit by the Chief Justice and companion Justices signifies a major step forward in that direction.
The High Court is actively considering the establishment of a District & Sessions Court in Chandel district in alignment with the developmental and judicial needs of the region, it added.
It may be mentioned that the state government has already created the post of District Judge, Chandel in March, 2025, laying the administrative foundation for the upcoming court.
The High Court remains committed to inclusive justice delivery and equitable judicial access across all districts of the state, especially in remote and aspirational areas like Chandel, the release conveyed.
