Jiribam, August 17 2025:
A day-long awareness programme on "Wildlife Management and Rescue Technique" was organised by Jiribam Forest Division at Lalpani, here, on Sunday with Jiribam divisional forest officer Elangbam Nirmala Chanu, honorary wildlife warden H Rajen Kumar, Sub Divisional Veterinary Hospital's deputy director Dr H Usharani, Dr Sudipta Deb of Jiribam district hospital and People For Animals, Manipur managing trustee Lourembam Biswajeet as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Elangbam Chanu stressed the importance of creating public awareness on wildlife protection, noting that ignorance is one of the factors for sale of wildlife products in markets, in-spite of such activities punishable under law.
Citing recent seizures of endangered species and wildlife parts in Jiribam, she said that the programme aims to sensitise the public about wildlife conservation and its legal implications.
Highlighting provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, Nirmala Chanu said that Jiribam district is home to diverse wildlife species, and local residents have been extending cooperation to forest officials in rescue operations.
However, she pointed out that rapid developmental works and road expansion have reduced the forest cover, resulting in the felling of large trees and threatening the survival of birds and animals, besides contributing to climate change.
As part of the programme, volunteers from People for Animals conducted demonstrations on wildlife rescue techniques.
