Imphal, September 25 2024:
Mao Council, apex tribal body of the Mao Nagas in Manipur, has reportedly accepted the judgment and order of the Tenyimia People's Organisation (TPO) Presidential Council regarding the traditional land dispute along the Nagaland-Manipur border.
According to an EastMojo report, the verdict on the nearly four-decade-old traditional land dispute in the Kezoltsa/Kozuru/Kazing area was ruled by the Presidential Council of the TPO.
The judgment aimed to settle the long-standing conflict between the Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO) from Nagaland, the Mao Council and the Maram Khullen village in Manipur.
The TPO is the apex tribal body of 10 Tenyimi tribes from Nagaland and Manipur.
In a letter addressed to the TPO, dated September 23, the Mao Council expressed gratitude for the outreach of the Lhisemia Khel of Kohima Village and the Angami Public Organisation (APO), who visited the Mao Council on August 30 and September 6, respectively.
The visits were part of a peaceful effort to bridge differences and foster unity among the Tenyimi family.
During their visit, the Lhisemia Khel clarified that their intention was not to impose on the Mao Council but to appeal for a reconsideration of the council' s earlier stance of non-acceptance of the TPO Presidential Council's verdict, in the interest of peace and Tenyimi unity, said the report.
It also stated that the APO president expressed that their visit was motivated by a desire to preserve the longstanding ties between the Angami and Mao communities.
The Mao Council convened an assembly on September 23, to reconsider its position.
After careful deliberation, the council voted to accept the TPO Presidential Council's July 12 judgment and order.
The TPO had previously granted an extension until September 25, for the Mao Council to resolve its internal deliberations, allowing time for the council to arrive at this decision, added the EastMojo report.
