Ukhrul, December 18 2024:
With Christmas - which traditionally symbolises peace - just round the corner, co-in-charge of Political Programmes and Meetings-BJP Manipur Michael Shaiza has called upon all concerned to embrace the spirit of Christmas as a time to heal and reconcile amid the current crisis in the state.
Speaking exclusively to The People's Chronicle in Ukhrul town on Wednesday, Shaiza noted that the 18-month long ethnic clashes between the Meetei and Kuki communities have severely disrupted lives and livelihoods across the state.
"The ongoing conflict has taken a toll on not just the conflicting parties but almost everyone - farmers, the poor, and the marginalised - regardless of their community, " he shared and added that the situation has affected lives and livelihoods in both the hills and valley of Manipur, leaving many struggling to make their ends meet.
In a time marked by strife, Christmas could be a poignant reminder of our intrinsic need for peace to help transform communities and heal deep-seated wounds, stated Shaiza who is also the president of Ukhrul-based NGO Ecological Rehabilitators Association (ERA).
He then implored both communities to set aside their differences.
"As Christmas is all about love, peace and harmony.
Through the grace and mercy of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, I, on behalf of all peace-loving people of Manipur, appeal and pray that an amicable and mutual understanding be brought about between the two warring communities and let peace and normalcy prevail in Manipur from this Christmas onwards," he said.
In a passionate plea, Shaiza also urged both the government of India and the government of Manipur to initiate peace talks between the Meeteis and Kukis, emphasising the urgent need for dialogue to restore normalcy.
"Let us not forget that Christmas is not just a time for receiving gifts, but for giving - giving love, care, and kindness to those in need" .
He observed that as Christmas comes, people of different faiths offer and exchange gifts of valuable goods but forgiveness, kindness and love are what make the celebration of Christmas complete.
"Because Jesus Christ is the ultimate image of forgiveness.
Let's turn our hearts this Christmas to those around us with love, kind ness and forgiving - this will be the best Christmas gift," he asserted.
Shaiza then wished all a Merry Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year, expressing hope that this festive season would be a catalyst for unity and reconciliation.
"May the spirit of Christmas bring us endless blessings, peace, and harmony," he said, echoing a Biblical message of "Peace on earth, goodwill towards men" .
"Let this Christmas usher in peace in Manipur.
My brothers and sisters, let's forgive each other and start rebuilding together our Manipur, the Jewel of the East," Shaiza added.
