Imphal, July 03 2025:
United Committee Manipur (UCM) president YK Dhiren has stated that discussions are being held to urge the central government to incorporate specific clause of safeguard in the Constitution to protect and preserve the pre-merger integrity and national unity of Manipur.
He made the statement at the 25th foundation day celebration of UCM cum inauguration of a yearlong silver jubilee celebration, at Tantha Hall, Lamphel Super Market on Thursday.
Dhiren continued that for the past 24 year, UCM has been fighting to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur, despite repeated attempts allegedly by the central government and external actors to disintegrate the state.
Even now, the demand for separate administration under the guise of the on-going conflict should not be taken lightly but necessitates concerted efforts of the people to fend off the threat.
He said that all indigenous communities need to understand that being harmonious with one another and working together is the only way to preserve the unity and integrity of Manipur.
It is an impossible dream for any community to believe that working in self-interest would lead to its development, he remarked.
Dhiren then said that we should not blindly trust the centre's assurance that it would preserve the territorial integrity of Manipur.
UCM believes that there needs to be a provision in the Constitution as a safeguard to protect Manipur's pre-merger territorial integrity and national unity.
For this, UCM is consulting legal experts and intellectuals to propose the same to the central government, he informed, and urged the people to stay alert until then.
The celebration was attended by UPF president Nongthombam Rupachandra, IPSA president Maibam Bisheshwar, NIPCO president Oinam Premjit, PANDM president Yumnamcha Dilipkumar, ACOAM-LUP Kangleipak president Soraisam Sanjit, Kanglamei president Y Lairikleima and AMKIL president Lourembam Nganbi as presidium members.
