Imphal, June 12 2025:
An inmate of Anouba Itinpham, a drug de addiction and rehabilitation centre located at Narankonjin Mamang Leikai, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at the facility on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Sanasam Achou alias Jackson (21), s/o late S Manglem Singh and Thaba Devi of Thoubal Haokha Makha Leikai.
Achou was reportedly found hanging inside the toilet of the rehabilitation centre and declared brought dead at the nearby Hand Hospital, Canchipur.
According to the hospital report, Achou was brought in as a case of hanging around 1:15 pm.
Meanwhile, family members of the deceased have raised suspicions regarding the circumstances of Jackson's death, arguing that it could not have been a suicide.
They pointed out that the place where he was reportedly found hanging is lower than his height, making the suicide claim questionable.
The family has decided not to claim the body, which is currently kept at the RIMS mortuary, until the truth behind his death is uncovered.
Addressing media persons at RIMS mortuary, the deceased's sister Soibam ongbi Surju Devi said that Achou was admitted to the drug de-addiction centre on June 8 .
She quoted Achou's elder brother, who visited the centre the following day, as saying that Achou, who appeared to be in good health, physically and mentally, requested for returning home after completion of the detox period.
However, on June 11, the centre informed the family that Achou had hanged himself in the toilet.
When the family rushed to the centre, they were told he had already been taken to Hand Hospital, where they discovered that he had already passed away.
She further stated that Achou could not have committed suicide and reiterated that the circumstances surrounding his death were highly suspicious.
When the family questioned Achou's roommates at the centre about the incident, they received conflicting accounts, which only deepened their suspicion.
Consequently, the family decided not to claim his body, which is presently at the RIMS mortuary, until the full truth behind his death is uncovered.
Meanwhile, the family has hied a case at the Wangoi police station in connection with the incident.
