Senapati, May 28 2025:
The Naga People's Organisation (NPO) has expressed deep concern over a circular issued by the Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association (SAHILCA), inviting members of the Gorkha community to hold discussion on issues related to conduct of Panchayat election as mentioned in a recent press release of the Manipur Gorkha Union (MGU) .
Strongly urging the SAHILCA to refrain from organising such a meeting, especially in the midst of sensitive and volatile situation in the state so as to avoid unnecessary confusion and tension, the NPO also cautioned that any discussion on 'Panchayat' or community decision making cannot be taken unilaterally by single community.
"Kangpokpi is home to several Naga villages and ancestral land.
Any attempt to exclude the voice of the Nagas would be incomplete and potentially divisive, and few Gorkha villages have no authorities to make any decision for the entire Gorkha in the state," said the NPO.
Reminding all concerned that Kangpokpi is a shared space where multiple communities live in close proximity, the NPO appeals to all concerned to act with caution, wisdom, and respect for all communities, while urging to collectively avoid any action that may sow misunderstanding or disharmony among residents.
