Imphal, July 14 2025:
Chanung locals working in their paddy fields at Chanung Cheibu of Imphal East had to flee from the area and seek safety after hearing sounds of around 10 shots fired from atop a nearby hill range around 10 am Monday.
Soon after the shots were fired, security forces deployed in the area raised an alarm asking the farmers to vacate their fields.
Meanwhile, the locals have ex pressed disappointment over the police, denying claims that the incident had occurred.
In this regard, one of the farmers questioned why the police were denying the incident, and wondered if the police would admit such incidents only when the farmers are injured to get killed.

The farmer recounted that when the first shot was heard, they thought nothing serious would happen as the President's Rule is still imposed in the state.
However, as frequency of gunfire increased, IRB personnel on duty whistled to alert the farmers leave their fields.
Claiming that the shots were fired from the direction of a Kuki village located on the eastern side of Cheibu Loukol, the farmer recounted that the Kukis had been making trouble in the area including setting fire.
He also expressed serious concern that the Meetei village volunteers, who have been protecting the locals, were forced to surrender their weapons, while nothing has been done to the other side.
If the police continue to deny the shots, how are the farmers supposed to farm in their land, the farmer questioned.
Meanwhile, COCOMI Farmers' Wing convenor AB Elangbam visited the location and took stock of the situation.
He also questioned whether the gunfire is being denied because no farmer was injured or killed.
He continued that since the conflict broke out, many farmers have been killed or injured by Kuki militants.
He urged the central government to rein in the Kuki militants in the hills, adding that the absence of administrative writ in the hills would never bring peace in the state.
