Siblings injured, arms snatched as Kuki onslaught continues

Imphal, September 02 2024: Kuki militants continued to attack Meetei villages using advanced weapons and drone-delivered explosives which left a sibling injured and decamped with three weapons of state forces from a security bunker hit by drones at Sinam village on Monday.

According to reports, a day after attacks on Meetei villagers of Koutruk and nearby settlements, Kuki militants launched another assault from around 5:30 am Monday, targeting Sinam village under Sagolmang police station in Imphal East using drone-delivered bombs.

The drone-delivered bombs hit a bunker of 8th IRB in between Sinam and Wakanphai villages, on the Meetei side.

Though the IRB personnel retaliated, the militants gained the upper hand, forcing the IRB personnel to retreat and eventually decamping with one each INSAS rifle, LMG and AK-47 rifle.

Village volunteers rushed to the scene and engaged in a gun battle with the Kuki militants to finally reclaim and reassemble the bunker.

Meanwhile, in another series of attack by Kuki militants on Thamnapokpi, Santikhongbal and Sanasabi villages around Sunday midnight, a villager identified as Ningombam Rakesh (27) s/o Ingo of Yaingangpokpi bazar suffered bullet wound on his leg.

He is presently undergoing treatment at JNIMS.

A team of Imphal East district police commandos rushed to the scene and engaged in a gun battle with the Kuki militants.

Reports also indicated verbal disputes between state and central forces.

The Kuki militants continued intermittent attacks on Meetei villages till Monday afternoon.

Following the attack, Meetei villagers abandoned their homes for safer locations while shops in Yaingangpokpi Bazar down shutters fearing reprisals.

In yet another attack by Kuki militants in Senjam Chirang area under Imphal West district a namely Watham Sanatombi (22) and her younger brother Sanatomba (20) suffered bomb splinter injuries.

Both were rushed to Shija Hospitals where Sanatombi underwent emergency surgery owing to bullet wound on her abdomen.
