Imphal, May 13 2010:
The All Manipur School Students' Transporters Association (AMSSTA) has appealed to the State Government to make special arrangements so that school van service operators are given necessary petrol.
Speaking to media persons today, AMSSTA general secretary S Sunder said that many schools are facing closure as van service has been halted due to unavailability of petrol.
Even as van drivers are under strong pressure from parents/guardians, they are helpless as all petrol pumps remained closed.
Out of 2800 school vans operating under the association, only around 25 per cent of the vans could get petrol when a few oil pumps were opened on May 12, Sunder said.
He urged upon the State Government to open a separate petrol pump for school vans.
The van service operators also appealed to parents' association and student bodies to understand the situation and help them whichever way they can.
The promised to resume van service as soon as petrol is made available.
