Sensitization programme on 'Inclusive Higher Education for PwD Students' held

Imphal, July 30 2026: A one-day sensitization programme on "Access to Inclusive Higher Education For Students with Disabilities" was held Thursday at the Library Hall of the Department of Political Science, Manipur University.

The programme was jointly organised by MU's Department of Political Science, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Manipur, and Manipur University Disabled Students Association.

State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities W Birahari, Social Welfare Department Director Abdul Hakim, Professors and students of the Political Science Department attended.

Speaking on the occasion, Abdul Hakim said Class 11 and 12 will be introduced from next year at the Government Blind School and Deaf & Mute School.

He added that the CRC at Takyel, Imphal offers various professional courses for Persons with Disabilities, and more courses will be added.

Hakim noted that while over 50,000 PwDs live in Manipur, only around 16,000-17,000 have UDID cards, which are essential to avail benefits.

To address this, he announced that a two-month mega Assessment Camp will be held across all 60 Assembly Constituencies of Manipur after the rainy season, in coordination with the Health Department.

He also urged society to treat PwDs as equals and called on institutions to improve assessment facilities.
