Kakching, July 15 2026:
The Kakching Khunou Municipal Council (KKMC) has appealed to the public to refrain from felling trees and clearing forests around Hungu Lok and San-Nathong Lok, the source of Tarang Turel, warning that legal action will be initiated against those violating the appeal.
The warning was issued by Caretaker Councillor Angom Bimolchand during a press conference held at the Kakching Khunou Municipal Council office on Wednesday in the presence of Caretaker Chairperson Kh Leima and other caretaker councillors.
Addressing the media, Bimolchand said indiscriminate tree felling and forest clearance in the catchment area by people from Kakching Khunou and neighbouring areas have severely affected the local ecosystem and contributed to the depletion of water in Tarang Turel.
He said the declining water level has reduced the availability of water for the Kakching Khunou Water Supply Scheme and has also affected irrigation, leaving many agricultural fields dry.
He attributed the situation to the pursuit of short-term benefits at the cost of long-term environmental sustainability, adding that the consequences are now being borne by the people of Kakching Khunou.
Bimolchand urged the Forest Department, particularly officials of the Waikhong and Wangoo Lamkhai Beat Offices, to maintain strict vigilance over the forested areas surrounding the river's source and take measures to prevent further destruction.
Appealing once again to the public to protect the forests around the origin of Tarang Turel, he warned that the Municipal Council would take stringent legal action against any individual found continuing to cut trees or clear forests in the area.
The press conference was also attended by caretaker councillors Kh Babu, Kh Radhamani, Thingnam Rishi, Thokchom Roshini, Sarangthem Chaoba and Kh Gojendro.
