10 Kuki militants slain near Myanmar border

Imphal, May 15 2025: At least 10 suspected KNF(B) militants have been slain in an encounter with security forces which took place near New Samtal village, Khengjoy sub-division, Chandel district on May 14, 2025 .

Acting on specific inputs from police about the presence of militants at Indo-Myanmar border near New Samtal village, a team of Assam Rifles personnel rushed to the spot on Wednesday morning, sources said.

As the AR troops under the army's Spear Corps reached the area, they came under heavy fire from the suspected KNF(B) militants.

During the operation, the troops were fired upon by suspected cadres, to which they quickly reacted, redeployed and retaliated in a calibrated and measured manner.

Operation is still in progress it added.

The heavy exchange of fire lasted for around 30 minutes.

After the exchange of firing ceased, at least 10 suspected KNF(B) cadres were found dead.

The AR troops also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition, said the sources.

It was suspected that the KNF(B) came to the New Samtal area to threaten officials engaged in the border fencing work and disturb the same work.

It is not yet clear whether the dead bodies will be brought to India or sent to Myanmar.

On the other hand, according to a statement uploaded in X ( Twitter) by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, the operation was initiated following credible intelligence inputs about the movement of armed cadres near New Samtal village in Khengjoy sub-division of Chandel district.

The region, located approximately 130 km from Imphal, is a remote and sparsely populated hilly area along the porous 398-km international border with Myanmar.

During the operation, troops came under fire from suspected insurgents.

The forces responded swiftly, redeployed tactically, and engaged in a controlled and calibrated retaliation.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, 10 militants were neutralised, and a significant cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the site yesterday morning and the operation is still underway, further said defence sources.
