Imphal, February 14 2026: An official ceremony was held today to inaugurate the Japanese Memorial at Nungshigum, a historic site associated with fierce fighting during the Battle of Imphal in World War II .

The memorial commemorates war history, peace, and reconciliation, honoring the soldiers who lost their lives and remembering the suffering endured during the conflict.

The project was initiated by the 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation in collaboration with the Japanese Expatriate Volunteer in India and the Keibi Khullen Village Development Committee.

Nungshigum Ridge was a strategically significant battleground in 1944, witnessing intense combat between Japanese and Allied forces.

Beyond remembrance, the memorial serves as a symbol of reconciliation and shared humanity, reflecting a collective commitment to peace, mutual respect, and strengthened ties between nations.

The solemn occasion included floral tributes, commemorative addresses, and a moment of silence.

Attendees included Tadashi Asazuma, vice president, Toyota Kirloskar Motors; Arambam Angamba Singh, president, 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation; Japanese representatives and community leaders of Keibi Khullen.
