Imphal, May 10 2024:
Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and Kangleipak Progressive Farmers' Association (KaPFA) have urged the state government to expedite the process for releasing compensation to the people affected by the recent thunderstorm and hailstorm that wreaked havoc in the state.
In separate releases, COCOMI and KaPFA stated that the recent thunderstorm and hailstorm that devastated many houses, standing crops and farms compounded miseries of the people who are already reeling under the impact of the ongoing ethnic conflict.
While sharing grievances of the people affected by the natural calamity, they commended prompt announcement made by the government to provide relief materials/compensation to the affected families.
While appealing the authorities concerned to expedite the com pensation/relief process, the bod ies cautioned against politicising the compensation process for the people in distress.
Highlighting the need of compiling survey report of the natural disaster, they opined that solely relying on report by DC, SDO and SDC will not suffice and suggested involvement of local clubs and meira paibis to accelerate the report collection exercise with due compliance to format of the government survey and submit the same to the DC and SDO concerned.
Moreover, there is the need for categorising gravity of loss or damage suffered by the people as worst affected and simply affected.
The worst affected people will not be able to recover if compensation is provided equally for both categories, COCOMI maintained.
