In the wake of Cyclone Remal wreaking havoc in the North Eastern regions of India, including Manipur, the directorate of health services and National Health Mission issued a health advisory to combat the aftermath of the disaster, stating that with heavy rainfall and storms triggering floods and landslides in various parts of Manipur, people face significant health risks.
With reference to the natural calamity, residents have been urged to adhere to a set of precautionary measures outlined by health authorities, such as consume only safe water, preferably boiled, to prevent waterborne diseases.
Additionally, thorough washing of vegetables, fruits, and raw materials with safe water before cooking is advised to minimise the risk of contamination.
Maintaining cleanliness in food preparation areas and ensuring food is cooked thoroughly are emphasised to prevent foodborne illnesses.
Furthermore, practicing regular hand hygiene through frequent washing is paramount to prevent the spread of infections.
Individuals experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea, fever, or any illness are also advised to seek immediate medical attention.
Health facilities should be promptly notified of any clustering of such cases to facilitate timely intervention.
Preventive measures against vector-borne diseases are also highlighted, including the use of mosquito nets, repellent creams, and.
coils.
Additionally, it is imperative to disinfect temporary shelter areas with bleaching powder and lime to mitigate the spread of infectious agents.
Residents are cautioned against consuming food materials soaked in floodwater and taking antibiotics or other medications without consulting a healthcare professional.
Direct contact with floodwater should be minimised, and individuals are advised to wash themselves with clean water after exposure.
Furthermore, overcrowding at temporary shelters and open defecation should be avoided to prevent the spread of diseases in vulnerable communities, the advisory added.
