Biswajit notes role of sports in fighting substance abuse

Thongju MLA Th Biswajit, who is also the president of Manipur Badminton Association (MBA), on Tuesday said that integrating sports with education can play a vital role in steering youths away from substance abuse and fostering development in society.
He made the remark while inaugurating new as well as upgraded facilities of MBA in DMU campus.
The function was attended by ADGP IK Muivah, fisheries director T Phulen, retired international badminton referee H Gyaneshwar, MBA general secretary H Sanjeev Sharma, as well as veteran and emerging players, and association members.
During the programme, Biswajit inaugurated a range of new infrastructure, including a girls' hostel, boys' hostel, administrative block, conference hall, multipurpose hall, guest rooms, field of play, upgraded lighting system, and eastern and western toilet blocks.
He said that Meira Paibi groups, civil society organisations, and government agencies have all been working actively to save the society from the growing menace of drug abuse.
In this effort, combining sports with education offers a constructive pathway for youths, providing not only discipline and direction but also a sense of purpose that can drive progress of the society.
The MLA also highlighted MBA's initiatives in nurturing promising talent in the sport.
He said that training under international coaches and the development of modern infrastructure are key steps taken by the association to support and motivate players.
These efforts reflect the association's commitment to building a strong foundation for badminton in the state while also contributing to a healthier, more progressive community, he contended.
