Nude protest of 2004 remembered on Anti-Repression Day

Imphal, July 15 2026: As in previous years, Anti-Repression Day was observed today at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound to commemorate the historic nude protest staged by 12 mothers near the western gate of Kangla on July 15, 2004 against the alleged atrocities committed by security forces under the impunity guaranteed by AFSPA .

During the programme, floral tributes were offered to the photographs of the three deceased Imas (mothers) who had participated in the symbolic protest against the killing of Thangjam Manorama by the Assam Rifles.

The other nine Imas who took part in the protest were also honoured with simple gifts during the programme.

The programme was graced by retired IAS officer Dr RK Nimai, United Committee Manipur president YK Dhiren and chairperson of the Observance Committee of Anti-Repression Day Kh Anandi.

Advisor to UPF Manipur Advocate Leishangthem Jadumani and Executive Director of Human Rights Alert Babloo Loitongbam were the resource persons.

Speaking at the event, Anandi said that Manorama was found dead on July 10, 2004, after she was taken away from her residence by Assam Rifles personnel without the presence of women personnel.

She said that Manorama was killed after being subjected to harassment and abuse.

She claimed that Central forces began violating human rights following the imposition of AFSPA in Manipur.

Saying that the people of Manipur observe Anti-Repression Day on July 15 every year to expose inhumane activities carried out under AFSPA, she added that the 12 mothers who showed defiance and protested against AFSPA must be honoured in the highest manner.
