The gunfight was going on when this report was filed at around 9.10 pm but there was no report of any injury on the village volunteers and the security personnel.
Even though thousands of Central security forces are currently deployed in violence-hit Jiribam, one more house was burnt down at Leingangpokpi today evening.
The house that has been gutted belonged to N Sadananda, advisor, Jiri Development Organisation (JDO) .
The incident happened at around 6 pm today.
Suspected Kukis burnt Sadananda's house along with a pig farm, a shop and a 2-room rented accommodation.
Not far from Sadananda's house is Phaitol, a Kuki village.
The area is heavily militarised with personnel of CRPF and Assam Rifles stationed there.
Meanwhile, a team of COCOMI representatives met Jiribam DC and SP and discussed the prevailing situation in the border district, today.
The team of COCOMI was led by United Committee Manipur (UCM) presi- dent Joychandra Konthou-jam.
During the meeting which lasted about 2 hours, the two sides held discussion on resettlement of the displaced Meetei folks of Jiribam to their native villages and restoration of normalcy in the border district.
The COCOMI team urged the Jiribam DC and the SP to make sure every Government department in Jiribam district headquarters work efficiently and address the grievances of the people taking refuge in relief camps.
Saying that many Government officials who are posted in Jiribam are not attending offices and it is disgraceful, the COCOMI urged the Government to take actions against these erring officials.
The Government should ensure the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Jiribam get adequate supply of food, medicines and other essential items, the COCOMI demanded.
The Jiribam DC and the SP, on the other hand, informed the visiting COCOMI team that the Government has been providing relief and essential items to the IDPs.
