Ahead of the 42nd foundation day of RIMS, Director traces growth of institute

Imphal, September 12 2013: "Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has emerged as a prominent medical institute in the country and the doctors who had passed out from it have done the institute proud by outshining others everywhere" .

This was stated by Prof S Sekharjit, Director RIMS while talking to reporters on ahead of its 42nd foundation day to be held on Saturday.

He said that the medical institute which is basically a teaching centre has been serving the NE States and now all States in the country are sending their students to it.

Earlier this institute was under the North Eastern Council and is now under the Union Health Ministry and the member States have stopped paying anything to the institute.

There are over 1800 employees in the institute.

The majority section is the nurses followed by the teaching fraternity.

There are over 250 well qualified teachers in the institute, he said.

The Director went on to say that the intake capacity of the MBBS candidates is 100 per annum.

While 85 students are from the NE region, 15 are from other mainland Indian States.

Every year 150 students are admitted in the post graduate courses.

75 of them are from all India quota while the remaining seats are shared by students from other states of the region.

"There are now 572 MBBS students.

But it will be increased once the students from Manipur and Meghalaya are admitted.

There are 433 post graduate course.

So far 2838 students have passed in under graduate course.

Besides 1057 post graduate students had passed from RIMS", Prof Sekharjit added.

He also elaborated on the post graduate and diploma courses opened in the institute.

The College of Nursing which was revived from 2011 is running commendably.

There are 167 students from the NE States and some of them are now in the 4th year.

Dental college is also operating commendably and there is now second year.

There are 100 students; one student had recently left.

The four storied OPD is nearing completion.

Besides, the construction of most of the hostels under the Hotel Management Committee headed by its Chairperson Dr N.Damayanti who is also the Head of the Anatomy department was completed.

The students are not facing accommodation problems now.

The paying wards these students had occupied are now made available to the patients, the Director maintained.

He also spoke at length about the developmental projects undertaken.

"For instance, after the introduction of the biometric machines the employees cannot truant and the CCTV has helped police to nab unwanted elements who made their presence felt in the RIMS areas.

There are many revolutionary improvements in the health care system in the hospital" .
