Satyabhama killing case: Bandh enters third day with no tangible State action

Imphal, April 07 2013 : For the second consecutive day, normal life in the State continued to remain affected on account of the indefinite Manipur bandh being imposed by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the killing of Ningombam Satyabama, demanding arrest and punishment of the killers.

The bandh was, however, total in Singjamei-Kakwa areas, thus preventing any sort of vehicular traffic along the National Highway 2.Since early morning, a large number of bandh supporters came out to the road at Kakwa areas along with timbers and burnt tyres to stop the traffic.

The JAC has made it clear that it would continue with the ongoing agitation until the Government fulfils its demand.

In an earlier memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the JAC demanded that all those involved in the killing of Satyabhama should be booked and given life imprisonment.

Giving five days' time in this regard, the JAC has also warned of intensifying the ongoing agitation in case of failure.

On the second day of the indefinite bandh today, tussle was witnessed between the police and the bandh supporters at around 1 pm while the agitators were trying to force shut down of Khwairamband market.

Consequently, around 20 members of JAC have been taken into police custody.

A Junior Research Fellow of DBT Project in Pathology at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, 31-year old Satyabhama d/o Ningombam Tomba of Kakwa Laishram Leikai Seluangba Leirak was found strangled to death and abandoned at Bashikhong Wangkhei Laoumanbi in the afternoon of April 5 .

Meanwhile, condemnation over the killing continues to pour in from various social organizations of the State.

They included Women Committee ofUnited NGO's Mission Manipur; Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM); Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meiralup (KANGLAMEI); People's Action For National Democratic Movement (PANDAM); Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO); Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK); Chanura Lamchinglel Kangleipak (CLK) and Women Welfare Organisation, Kangleipak.

In separate statements, these social organisations have also exerted pressures on the Government for arresting the culprits for befitting punishment as per the law of the land.

Women Welfare Organisation has even demanded death sentence to the culprits to ensure such gruesome crimes are not repeated in the future.
