CM takes note of service of private rehab centres

Imphal, February 05 2022: Taking note of the initiatives taken up by former drug users to combat the problem of drug abuse and alcoholism in the State, Chief Minister N Biren stated that though the Covid pandemic has hindered the implementation of the Manipur State Policy on Psychoactive Substances Act, 2019, it has not stopped the State Government from putting on its best foot forward to combat the drug menace that is creating havoc in the State.

The Chief Minister made this observation during a meeting with representatives of 70 drug/alcohol rehabilitation centres which have come together under the banner of Suitable Guideline for Non-Funded Private Rehabilitation on February 4 at his official residence.

Earlier addressing the meeting, convener of the Committee Sagolshem Herojit noted the formulation of the said Act and expressed hope that it would be implemented in letter and spirit under the leadership of the Chief Minister.

Herojit also drew the attention of the Chief Minister to the need to formulate a State specific guideline for non-funded private drug/alcohol rehabilitation centres which can give a boost to the treatment of drug/alcohol dependants.

During the meeting with the Chief Minister the representatives of the private rehabilitation centres had a detailed and fruitful discussion on the challenges being faced by service providers on the drug treatment front.

The representatives of the private drug/alcohol rehabilitation centres also lauded the commitment of the State Government towards the eradication of drug menace in the State and resolved to support the Chief Minister in all his future endeavours.

Acknowledging the positive role taken up by the Committee, the Chief Minister commended the initiatives of former drug users to tackle the drug issue dogging the State and observed that former drug victims emerging as saviours through their services and efforts is the ultimate symbol of fortitude and should be encouraged.

The Chief Minister further said that though the COVID-19 pandemic has hampered the implementation of Manipur State Policy on Psychoactive Substances Act 2019, the State Government has been putting in its utmost efforts to curb the drug menace that is creating havoc in the State.

There has been continuous crackdown on drug trafficking and massive drive against poppy plantation, he added.

Drug victims are not to be blamed for their predicament for they didn't choose the life they are leading, observed the Chief Minister and maintained that a reckless action or wrong move could lead someone to the throes of addiction and drugs.

He also stressed on the need to empower victims of drugs through a holistic approach that encompasses health and welfare schemes.

A symbolic Meitei traditional spear, sword and a shield embossed with Kangla Sha was also gifted to the Chief Minister by a committee member who had been clean from drugs for a period of 18 years in appreciation of the unrelenting fight against drugs.
