Imphal, January 05 2017: Paying tributes to the departed soul, the State unit of the BJP during a condolence meeting held at its office recalled how the late Professor rewrote and gave a new meaning to the term 'Positive Secularism' to assert that BJP is not an anti-Christian party.

State unit president of the party, K Bhabananda who presided the condolence meeting recalled the many positive inputs of the late Professor not only to the BJP but also to the State.

The members observed a two minute silence during the condolence meeting, conveyed a press release issued by general secretary N Nimbus.

It further informed that the party will mourn the demise of the Professor for three days at the State level.

During this period of mourning, the party's flag would be flown at half-mast.

S Premananda, vice-president, BJP Manipur Pradesh, on behalf of BJP, Manipur Pradesh, extended his deepest condolences to the family members of Prof Gangmumei Kamei.

"The whole BJP family mourns with you and celebrates the extraordinary life of our beloved leader, academician and historian, who devoted his entire life to peaceful co-existence of the ethnic groups of Manipur," the BJP vice-president said in his condolence message.

Apart from his social and academic contributions, Prof Gangmumei was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the year 1995 and 2001.He was the Minister for Forest, Environment and Higher Education and held important portfolios in the then Government led by Nipamcha Singh (1998 and 2001) .

Prof Gangmumei Kamei joined BJP in 2012.His joining the National Party boosted the presence of BJP in the hill areas of the State, it said.

The vast knowledge and experience of more than 40 years in the fields of academia, social activism and politics was a real asset to BJP, Manipur Pradesh and a source of inspiration to many.

The work of Prof Gangmumei stands as a testament to the field of education, politics, and communal harmony, said the BJP and added that his tireless efforts in bringing communal harmony and vast knowledge in different fields earned him two very important and positions namely, member of the Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR) and Member of the Regional Planning Body, the North Eastern Council (NEC) under the aegis of the DoNER Ministry.

"His legacy will stand as an example to all of us to persist in our pursuit of progress.

His death is a big loss for the people of Manipur," added BJP.

Meibon Phaomei, deputy mayor, Imphal Municipal corporation also condoled the demise of the Professor and said that it is an irreparable loss for the Nation, State, the North East region and the Zeliangrong people.

The Manipur Mountaineering and trekking Association (MMTA) has also condoled the demise of the Professor during a special meeting held at its office at Minuthong today.

The representatives of the association led by their president visited the residence of the late man at Major Khul.
