Brief downpour floods streets of Imphal

Imphal, June 01 2026: Has rainfall become synonymous with problems in Manipur? A brief spell of heavy rain this afternoon inundated several areas in Imphal and its surroundings.

The continuous downpour, which lasted for a few hours, caused waterlogging in several areas, including Tiddim Road, Andro Parking, Wangkhei, Kakwa, Singjamei, Khagempalli, Cheirap Court Complex, Keishamthong Hodam Leirak, Tera, Kwakeithel, Sagolband etc, creating serious inconvenience to commuters and residents.

Residential areas in low-lying areas were also severely affected by waterlogging and these recurring inundations highlight inadequate drainage facilities in the city.

Some elderly residents told The Sangai Express that Manipur has witnessed a significant change in its drainage system-not in terms of improvement, but deterioration.

They said that drains exist in name only today, unlike in the past, due to encroachment.

They added that most drains are now clogged with plastic waste and other waste discarded by people lacking civic sense.

Even if the roads are inundated, people still have to come out of necessity, the elders said and urged the Government to improve drainage facilities and prevent encroachment on drains.

Stating that inundation also poses risks to public health, they appealed to the public not to dispose of waste in drains.

It would be wrong to place the entire blame for frequent inundation on the Government alone, they added.
