Assam Rifles observes World Nature Conservation Day with plantation drives across Manipur

Bishnupur/Chandel, July 28 2026: The Assam Rifles observed World Nature Conservation Day by organising environmental awareness and community tree plantation drives in Bishnupur and Chandel districts on Tuesday.

The IGAR (South) in a release said that the day is observed annually to focus attention on the imperative need to preserve natural resources, protect fragile ecosystems, and mitigate the severe impacts of global warming caused by environmental degradation.

At Maibam Lotpa Chingning Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district, Assam Rifles organised an interactive environmental awareness programme followed by a sapling plantation drive.

The session highlighted the role of youths in conserving natural resources, protecting the environment for future generations and addressing the harmful effects of global warming and environmental degradation.

Around 50 youths from the Maibam Sunlight Youth Club and 10 local women participated in the programme.

Assam Rifles personnel, along with community members, planted nearly 200 saplings, including mango, jamun and eucalyptus trees, as part of the initiative.

In Chandel district, Assam Rifles also organised a large-scale plantation drive at Modi, Larong, Machi and Chandel, bringing together more than 500 participants, including Assam Rifles personnel, students, teachers and local residents.

More than 800 saplings were planted at various locations with the aim of increasing green cover, promoting biodiversity and strengthening long-term ecological balance.

Participants were also sensitised on afforestation, conservation of natural resources and adopting eco-friendly practices.

They were encouraged to take responsibility for nurturing the planted saplings to maturity.

The coordinated initiatives underscored the importance of community participation and civil-military cooperation in protecting the environment and preserving natural resources for future generations.
