Imphal, May 13 2025:
The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) took out a protest rally demanding full implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the State before the start of a new academic session.
Volunteers of DESAM took out the rally from DESAM head office located at Kwakeithel Bazar and proceeded toward the Directorate of University and Higher Education at Nityaipat Chuthek holding placards demanding full implementation of NEP.
However, they were stopped by police at Keishampat Junction, where iron barricades were put up.
After negotiations, some leaders were allowed to meet the Director of Higher Education with their demands, while the rest were restricted at Keishampat Junction.
Speaking to the media after meeting the Director, DESAM president Mayengbam Somorjit stated that many colleges still face significant challenges, including severe teacher shortages with some having no teacher to teach a subject although the Council of Higher Education Education Manipur (CoHSEM) has announced results of the Class XII examination and begun phased admissions under NEP.
He urged the authorities to fill the vacant teaching positions before the new academic session.
Saying that DESAM has been demanding rationalization of college teachers, as some colleges have surplus teachers in certain departments while others do not have even a single teacher, Somorjit emphasized that authorities must utilize all resources to provide a quality education system to students.
He then urged all concerned to fulfil their demands by May 30 .
