Students call for 220 teaching days, end to corruption in education sector

Imphal, July 30 2026: As part of the month-long 'Disturbance-Free Educational Zone Demand' campaign, students of Srivan Higher Secondary School and Sagolmang Higher Secondary School in Imphal East district on Thursday staged demonstrations in front of their schools.

Organised by the Coordinating Committee on Disturbance-Free Educational Zone Demand, the protest saw students holding placards and banners with various demands.

The students urged that no monetary or material demands should be made at schools and educational institutions.

They also demanded that the Government refrain from politicizing education, and strictly implement the rule that there should be no less than 220 teaching days in an academic year.

The protestors further demanded timely implementation of Government policies, and said delays in work are disrupting the education system and causing hardship to students.

They called for an end to corruption, nepotism and favouritism in education-related matters.

Other demands included appointment of qualified directors in the Education (S) and Education (U) Directorates, creation of a separate Directorate for Teacher Education, and stopping the misuse of the Government's transfer and posting policy as a means of extortion.

The students also demanded that educational institutions and stakeholders be given autonomy, that the education sector be declared an essential service, and that schools be made safe zones free from disturbances.

Committee members addressed the students and raised awareness on the objectives of the 'Disturbance-Free Educational Zone Demand Day' .
